GGPoker Announces 2023 GGMasters Overlay Edition Schedule, Guaranteed for $10 Million

Appears to be a great deal of overlap ahead
GGPoker has announced the specifics for the 2023 GGMasters Overlay Edition tournament, which will be held for the second time. The event is scheduled to begin on February 19, with a $10 million guarantee and a $150 buy-in. This prize pool is twice that of the initial Overlay Edition from the previous year.

On February 19, there are three Day 1A flights: one for Asia, one for Europe, and one for the Americas. Day 1B occurs just once on February 25, whereas Day 1C replicates the first flight on February 26. There are two additional Day 1Ds on Monday, February 27, the same day as the tournament’s concluding Day 2.

The crucial aspect of the GGMasters Overlay Edition is that it is one of the few major tournaments that is genuinely a freezeout. Only one entry per person is permitted. Rarely do re-entry tournaments include overlays since players might naturally enter many times, hence increasing the prize pool.

With a $10 million guarantee, a $138 buy-in, and a $12 event fee, GGPoker will need 72,464 unique participants to avoid an overlay. GGPoker is by far the most popular online poker site, yet it is quite improbable that a single event can attract more than 70,000 participants.

Daniel Negreanu putting his money behind his words
As a result of Daniel Negreanu, GGPoker’s most recognizable advocate, there is a 100 percent chance of an overlay.

“I’m so convinced that this won’t hit [the guaranteed prize pool] that if I’m incorrect and the prize pool exceeds $9,000,000, I’ll spend my own money to enhance the final overlay to $1,000,000.” Indeed, DNegs will guarantee a $1 million overlay!”

Therefore, we now know that the minimum overlay that participants will get is $1 million. Negreanu will add $1 million to any prize pool above $9 million, creating an overlay of $1 million. Any amount less than $9 million contains at least one million dollars.

If the tournament from last year is any indicator, Negreanu’s money is secure. The inaugural GGMasters Overlay Edition attracted 33,806 players, which is remarkable but well below what is required this time. With a $5 million guarantee in 2022, GGPoker has to make up $334,772 in overlay. Obviously, more individuals could go this year, but a 40,000-player deficit is significant.

The success of the 2022 edition also produced difficulties for GGPoker. Some players were unable to take their seats or deposit monies due to technical issues that the online poker room attributed to the large number of individuals attempting to play. Some satellite tournaments ended before to their start, while others ended mid-stream. Even though the whole event continued to its conclusion, the opening day was a disappointing one for many.
